January 2006 Dodgy product review

The MP3 boom has reached millions. Being able to download a song, legally or otherwise, and playing the tune on a small device obviously called an MP3 player appeals to many. MP3 players are expensive, for the reason being the storage medium within the device, Flash memory, hasn't been cheap to produce. Over recent years though, Flash memory has dropped in price, and no name company's have started making MP3 players which can be bought within cheap shops. And yes, they are really cheap and nasty.

Today, Dodgy product review examines the 'U-DISK+MP3' Player. Sold for around $30 in Crazy Clarks, a queensland based cheap shop product that's made in China and has 128 megabytes of Flash memory built in. Only 110 mb total memory is on offer though , meaning the player can only hold roughly 20 MP3 Encoded songs , or 30 if encoded in WMA. A USB connector is built into the device. Which is a pain in the arse as the plastic lid that covers the connector keeps falling off.

Sound quality is pathetic. Earphones supplied with the product dont fit in the ears and begin to cause pain when used for fifteen minutes or more. With four buttons and one small LED on the front including a 'hold' switch on the top, the player is extremely difficult to operate. The user must press the buttons for the exact right amount of time before the track plays. Also, if the file uploaded is not one of the few it can read, the light on the player starts flashing erratically, with no way to stop it.

The 'U-DISK+MP3' player is a complete waste of money. Save up and buy a name brand MP3 player. For the record though, it does double as data storage. Meaning you can copy porn images from your mates computer to your own without the battery in the device.
